Im working on some old gerber files (ca 2004). Everything is drawn as traces, this prevents me from "building parts" and creating a PNP file. Is there a way to group or convert these individual traces and form a pad?

Yes, the easiest is to use the command: Convert to Flash (Selective) menu: Tools | Convert to | Flash (Selective)...

Here's a quick video showing me convert those drawn pads to Flashes (optionally using Filter - which is not required),

Here's another example using Convert to Flash (Automatic), menu: Tools | Convert to | Flash (Automatic)...

Note: Once all Flashed Pads, you can continue with Build Parts are usual.
